ΣTIΣ 20 Μαΐου ξεκίνησε η λειτουργία του «The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort» (www.romanoscostanavarino.com), του πρώτου ξενοδοχείου στην Costa Navarino (www.costanavarino.com), τον νέο ολοκληρωμένο τουριστικό προορισμό υψηλών προδιαγραφών στη Μεσσηνία.
Εξακόσιοι ενενήντα τέσσερις εργαζόμενοι, που σε ποσοστό πάνω από 70% προέρχονται από τη Μεσσηνία, υποδέχθηκαν τους πρώτους επισκέπτες. Frits van Paasschen, πρόεδρος και CEO της Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, μιας από τις μεγαλύτερες αλυσίδες πολυτελών ξενοδοχείων στον κόσμο που διαχειρίζεται τα δύο πρώτα ξενοδοχεία της Costa Navarino, ταξίδεψε από την Αμερική και τα επισκέφθηκε στις 15 Μαΐου. Στην επίσκεψη συμμετείχε ο κ. Costa Navarino
The new Navarino Dunes complex opened this week, offering two luxury hotels and Greece's first signature golf course amid Messenia's sun-drenched olive groves.
The new Romanos and Westin hotels are inspired by Messenian mansions and have been built as low rise villa clusters, using natural stone to showcase the local architectural features.
The Romanos Hotel features 321 rooms and standalone villas, all with free internet and large screen televisions and many with private infinity pools.
When the Westin Hotel officially opens July 1, the hotels will offer 776 rooms and eight restaurants between them.
In the centre of the two is Agora, an authentic village centre offering everything from outdoor "dinner theatre" to a fully blown amphitheatre and a range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
The developers say that Anazoe, the 4,000 square meter onsite spa, combines ancient Greek medicine and philosophy with modern scientific treatments.
Guests can opt for light therapy, ice-grotto rooms, mist showers, herbal saunas, floating pools and kinisiotherapy.
For those unsatisfied by the beach and infinity pools onsite at the hotels, just outside the cluster is Golf by Troon, a new course designed by former US Masters Champion Bernhard Langer which offers the largest green in Europe.
Later this year, a second course is set to open, designed by noted course architect Robert Trent Jones II.
Navarino Dunes is the first quarter of the ambitious Costa Navarino complex, which aims to increase tourism to the largely undiscovered Messenia region.
The next phase is Navarino Bay, which is set to open in 2012 and will include yet another golf course, a Banyan Tree resort and another unspecified five star hotel.

Περιβαλλοντικό παρατηρητήριο στη Μεσσηνία
Περιβάλλον Ενέργεια Οικολογία:
Η δημιουργία ενός ερευνητικού περιβαλλοντικού παρατηρητηρίου στην Ελλάδα με την επωνυμία «Navarino Environmental Observatory» (Ν.Ε.Ο.), στην Costa Navarino στη Μεσσηνία, παρουσιάστηκε σε ειδική εκδήλωση που πραγματοποιήθηκε την Πέμπτη στην Ακαδημία Αθηνών.
Όπως αναφέρεται σε δημοσίευμα της Ημερησίας, η ίδρυση του ΝΕΟ αποτελεί την πρώτη προσπάθεια στην Ελλάδα για τη δημιουργία ενός διεθνούς φήμης ερευνητικού κέντρου για την κλιματική αλλαγή.
Το ΝΕΟ αποτελεί προϊόν της συνεργασίας μεταξύ του Κέντρου Bert Bolin για την κλιματική αλλαγή του Πανεπιστημίου της Στοκχόλμης, του Τομέα Ατμοσφαιρικού Περιβάλλοντος του Ιδρύματος Ιατροβιολογικών Ερευνών της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών (ΙΙΒΕΑΑ) και της εταιρείας TEMES Α.Ε.
Τις επόμενες δεκαετίες η Μεσόγειος θα αντιμετωπίσει σημαντικές περιβαλλοντικές και κλιματικές προκλήσεις.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η κλιματική αλλαγή στην ευρύτερη περιοχή αναμένεται να οδηγήσει σε αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας, των περιστατικών ξηρασίας αλλά και των δασικών πυρκαγιών. Ως εκ τούτου θα επηρεαστεί σημαντικά η κοινωνία αλλά και ο τουριστικός κλάδος.
Για τους παραπάνω λόγους συμφωνήθηκε μεταξύ των δύο ακαδημαϊκών φορέων, με τη στήριξη και χρηματοδότηση της εταιρείας TEMES Α.Ε., το ακόλουθο Ερευνητικό Πρόγραμμα που απαρτίζεται από πέντε τομείς έρευνας:
Μεταβολές στη σύσταση της ατμόσφαιρας.
1) Προσομοιώσεις της ποιότητας της ατμόσφαιρας και των κλιματικών αλλαγών σε παγκόσμια και τοπική κλίμακα.
2) Η συμβολή των κλιματικών και περιβαλλοντικών αλλαγών στην ανάπτυξη της αστυφιλίας και η επίδρασή τους στον τουρισμό.
3) Μελέτη φυσικών αρχείων για τη διερεύνηση των κλιματικών και περιβαλλοντικών αλλαγών του παρελθόντος στη Μεσσηνία.
4) Παράκτια γεωμορφολογία, γεωλογία και μεταβολή της τοπογραφίας.
Σημειώνεται ότι παράλληλα με τη λειτουργία του ΝΕΟ, εντός των εγκαταστάσεων της Costa Navarino, η ΤEMES θα δημιουργήσει ένα διαδραστικό περιβαλλοντικό εκθεσιακό χώρο, το Navarino Natura Hall, με στόχο την ενημέρωση του κοινού σε θέματα προστασίας του περιβάλλοντος.

Official announcement of the operation of the Navarino Environmental
Observatory (N.E.O.) at Costa Navarino in Messinia
Model of cooperation between academic organizations and the private
sector in the field of research on climate change in the Mediterranean
The establishment of the ‘Navarino Environmental Observatory’ (N.E.O.) at Costa
Navarino in Messinia was presented at a special event on Thursday, 11 February. The
event, held at the Academy of Athens, was attended by a large number of guests
including representatives of the Greek government, the Church, local authorities of
the Peloponnese and non-governmental organizations active in the field of
environmental protection.
It is the first time in Greece that an international environmental observatory
dedicated to the study of climate change is established as a result of the cooperation
between a private Greek company and academic institutions of global repute. N.E.O.
is the fruit of cooperation between the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research at
Stockholm University, the Centre of Environmental Health and Biophysics of the
Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens and TEMES S.A. The
preparatory work had already begun in September 2008 and concluded with the
signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the three parties in Stockholm on
3 December, 2009.
A delegation of 15 professors from Stockholm University, headed by Professor Kεre
Bremer, President and Vice Chancellor, attended the event, while the deans of the
colleges that will be participating in the Observatory presented the objectives and
the educational program of N.E.O.
In parallel with the Navarino Environmental Observatory, TEMES will operate the
Navarino Natura Hall, an interactive environmental exhibition center within Costa
Navarino. The aim of the Navarino Natura Hall will be to raise awareness on
environmental protection issues among the public and young people in particular.
“It is highly positive to be a part of what is, for the Swedish situation, a new type of
collaboration between business and academia. We consider that TEMES has
credibility within the field of climate and environment, which are leading research
areas at Stockholm University. We also look forward to a deeper collaboration with
Academy of Athens, something that opens the possibility for new cross-disciplinary
research projects,” says Professor Kεre Bremer, President and Vice Chancellor of
Stockholm University.
According to Professor and Academician Gregory Skalkeas, President of the
Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens: “The agreement signed
by the Rector of Stockholm University, academician Christos Zerefos and TEMES fills
us with pride, for in addition to the high level of cooperation ensured by the
participation of so many distinguished scientists, it marks the first time that the
Academy of Athens has signed such an important agreement, the implementation of
which will be co-financed by the private sector”.

The Centre of Environmental Health and Biophysics of the Biomedical Research
Foundation of the Academy of Athens has been involved in pioneering research on
ozone, chemistry-radiation interactions and global change during the past decades.
The Biomedical Research Foundation is a non-profit institution, established by the
Academy of Athens, which traces its name to the 3rd century BC Plato's Academy; it
therefore brings the heritage of the first Academy on Earth. The Centre has
participated in all WMO/UNEP Ozone Assessments and in numerous competitive
international research projects and campaigns.

The Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University is a pioneering
institute within the field of climate and environmental research. The late Bert Bolin,

According to the Greek National Land Registry, there are 1,750 properties and estates in Messinia that are owned by foreigners. Already many British and other foreign people have brought second homes on the Mani peninsular. Whereas there are relatively few that have purchased property on the Messinian peninsular.
Property Purchasing Trends In Messinia
Property purchasing trends are set to change. In the past the main area of interest to foreign buyers has been the Mani as it has been a popular holiday destination for many years. However, interest has moved to and increased on the Messinian peninsular more recently. This is largely due to the Government actively encouraging investment on the Messinian peninsular. It is aiming to stimulate local revenue and employment by developing tourism projects in and local infrastructure. The private sector also has a growing interest in the areas of Finikounda, Methoni and Pylos. There is currently a great deal of focus on the championship golf courses to the north of Pylos which are due to open in spring 2009. Finikounda and Methoni both have plans to increase housing and developments and tourist accommodation..
